“Pornography never hurt anyone.” How many times have you heard that?
Try telling that to the parents of an 18-year-old who was killed in a head-on collision. He, along with his passenger and the driver of the vehicle who struck him, all died as a result of this distracted driving incident. However, it’s not the average run-of-the-mill distraction story.
First responders arriving on scene found that the driver, who hit the teen’s vehicle head-on, had been viewing pornography on his cell phone at the time of impact.
The teen’s mom issued a statement to CBS News saying:
“I am not an angry person by nature, and as time goes on I’m definitely dealing with anger over that, because to me it’s so senseless – watching porn, cell phone use…He killed my son.”
Yes, this case may be extreme. However, it highlights how far someone is willing to go in order to feed their addiction to pornography. I’d like to tell you that this is an isolated incident, but it’s not.
Newsweek once posted an article regarding another fatal crash that happened in Minnesota. A highway worker was killed after being hit by a semi-truck. According to investigators, the driver of the semi apparently started watching a porn video less than two minutes before losing control of his truck.
In 2016, a driver in Detroit was killed after being partially ejected from his sunroof after losing control of his vehicle. The accident report revealed that the man was only partially clothed and had been watching pornography on his phone when the accident occurred.

Not too recently, I was traveling down the interstate in the early morning hours for an appointment. As I passed another vehicle, not only was the driver watching pornography, but he was also streaming it to the screens in the backseat.
I was thankful that, first of all, my children were not in the car at the time. And secondly, I was shocked at his total disregard for those around him. Had there been an accident that would have stopped traffic completely, the vehicles that would have been sitting on either side of him would have been subjected to the sexually explicit content – by no fault of their own.

All of these situations highlight the truth – pornography is a huge problem.
Pornography promises everything but provides nothing. We’re being trained to believe that viewing pornography is harmless fun. But those who are promoting pornography are failing to educate the public on the effects pornography has on the brain.
Like any other addiction, pornography usage can and likely will escalate. An individual will start looking for more hardcore scenes, while also spending more time viewing pornography.
Not only does this cause them to isolate – spending more time away from family and friends, but it also can become a major source of distraction in one’s daily life. Many individuals, over time, become desensitized to their habits. They no longer can perceive that their actions could be threatening or painful to those around them. Some will even risk their jobs at the expense of viewing pornography while on the clock.

The more the addiction is fed, the deeper one falls into denial and the riskier their behavior becomes. We will guard and protect the thing that seems to bring us so much satisfaction. This will come at the cost of blaming everyone and everything else around us for our behavior. At this point, we will struggle to take accountability for our own actions – until something devastating, such as the accidents mentioned above, happens to provide us with a wake-up call.
Don’t wait until you’re at the point of complete devastation to seek help. You can choose to walk away from the life that you’ve been living and instead choose to surrender to God the depth of your pain, struggle, and torment. This is not a battle that you can win by yourself. It will require you to be courageous enough to step out in faith to seek help and support.
